Dear Editor,

I am a [parent/grandparent/concerned citizen] in the [name of district]. I am also a [historian, a children’s book writer, and a poet].

I am writing today in support of our professional educators and school administrators. I believe they have the expertise to select the instructional resources and develop lesson plans best suited to achieve learning standards, meet curriculum expectations, and support student learning outcomes.

I am aware of movements by some people in legislatures and at the school board level to silence or censor educational components that they find objectionable or “political.”

I reject these movements and hope you will too. Our teachers deserve our respect and our support.

In our house, we value all families, we study our history, and we work for justice and equality everywhere. We also believe in learning about the shared stories of our past – even when they are hard, sad, or difficult. Our kids, we believe, deserve an education that speaks honestly about Americans – our past, present and future.

Teachers are doing that right now in our schools. We need to recognize their professional knowledge, practices, and expertise as they create a path of study for kids that prepares all students for college, career, and civil life.

Teachers and schools work best when they have our resounding support for access to resources and professional respect and the freedom to make instructional decisions that they are best equipped to make. The schools and teachers of [your district] have mine and I hope they have yours.

Thank you,
